Monday, November 16, 2009

The Penguins won their second game in a row, 5-2, against the Anaheim Ducks tonight at Mellon Arena.

Matt Cooke shoveled the puck through traffic from the slot to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead at 1:31 of the first period.

Bill Guerin's blast from the top of the slot gave the Penguins a 2-0 lead at 5:13 of the first period and ended an 0-for-30 drought on the power play dating back eight-plus games.

The Ducks struck back with a shorthanded goal, on a Todd Marchant backhander, at 9:06 of the first period, pulling Anaheim to within 2-1. The goal came on Anaheim's second shot.

The Penguins upped their lead to 3-1 with a shorthanded goal of their own at 4:09 of the second period. Jordan Staal took a lead pass from Deryk Engelland and got behind the Ducks players for a breakaway from the blue line. He drove in and beat Anaheim goaltender Jean-Sebastian Giguere high to the stick side.

The assist was Engelland's first NHL point.

Martin Skoula scored his first goal as a Penguin, a wrist shot from the left boards that beat a screened goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere at 3:28 of the third period to make it 4-1.

Teemu Selanne scored at 17:21 of the third period on a blast from the left circle to close it to 4-2 for Anaheim.

Cooke added an empty net goal with 12.9 seconds left.

The Penguins begin a three-game road trip Thursday at Ottawa.
