Gordon wins pole in Texas

Jeff Gordon is on the pole in Texas.

Gordon won his first pole of the season with a qualifying lap of 191.117 mph at the 1 1/2-mile, high-banked track where he got his only victory of the season in April. It was his first win in Texas.

It is the 68th career pole for this four-time champion, who is third in the standings this season.

Points leader Jimmie Johnson, who is going for his unprecedented fourth consecutive title, qualified 12th.

Mark Martin, who is second 184 points behind, starts seventh tomorrow.

More auto racing

Matt Kenseth will start on the pole for the NASCAR Nationwide Series at Texas today, five spots ahead of points leader Kyle Busch.

Kenseth earned his first pole in his 13 Nationwide races this season, the 16th in his career, with a qualifying lap of 187.201 mph in his Ford. David Ragan also starts his Ford on the front row.

Busch, who has a 205-point lead over Carl Edwards with three races left, starts sixth. Edwards starts directly behind him in the No. 8 spot.

Busch won from the pole at Texas in April, one of his seven Nationwide victories.

College basketball

Talor Battle had 16 points and 10 rebounds, leading host Penn State to an 82-51 exhibition victory against Division II Slippery Rock. Chris Babb added 12 points and Sasa Borovnjak 10 for the Nittany Lions, who were playing their first game since winning their first NIT title in the spring.

Tennis

Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic reached the semifinals of the Swiss Indoors in Basel, staying on course to meet in the final. Three-time defending champion Federer cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win against Russian qualifier Evgeny Korolev and Djokovic pulled out a 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory over Stanislas Wawrinka.

• Top-seeded Andrew Murray carried his comeback from a wrist injury into the Valencia Open semifinals by cruising past Albert Montanes of Spain, 6-4, 6-2.

• Frenchman Richard Gasquet will go before the highest court in sports Tuesday for what he says was a cocaine-tainted kiss in a nightclub. The World Anti-Doping Agency and International Tennis Federation have asked the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland to ban him for one to two years.

Hockey

Meghan Duggan scored the winner in the second period and the United States defeated Canada, 3-2, in their final group game of the Four Nations Cup in Vierumaki, Finland. Both teams already had advanced to the final today.

Jennifer Kindret had two goals as Robert Morris surprised defending national champion Wisconsin, 3-1, in Madison.

Track and field

Usain Bolt's coach will continue working with the Olympic champion and world record holder even though he is stepping down as Jamaica's national team coach after 22 years. Glen Mills said he felt it was time to resign, saying, "There are a lot of coaches who are making their mark."

• The 2015 Pan American Games will be in Toronto. Toronto won on the first ballot, eliminating Bogota, and Lima, Peru. Canada has held the event twice -- in Winnipeg in 1967 and '99. Toronto has failed in two bids to host the summer Olympics.

Softball

Authorities say preliminary autopsy results show drowning as the cause of death for three Dickinson State college players found dead inside a sport utility vehicle that sunk in a rural farm pond in North Dakota.

Boxing

Lou Filippo, a World Boxing Hall of Famer who judged 85 world champion fights and had small roles in the "Rocky" movies, died Monday in Downey, Calif. He was 83.

Soccer

For the first time in school history, four Pitt women's players earned All-Big East Conference honors. Junior midfielder Liz Carroll, sophomore midfielder Katelyn Ruhe and junior defender Kat Weiler earned All-Big East third team honors, while freshman forward Ashley Cuba was named to the All-Big East rookie team.
