NHL Roundup: Datsyuk, Zetterberg lift Red Wings over Sharks in shootout
Friday, November 06, 2009

Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg scored in the shootout to lift the host Detroit Red Wings to a 2-1 victory against San Jose, snapping the Sharks' six-game winning streak.

Zetterberg also had a goal in regulation, and Chris Osgood made 33 saves for Detroit.

Rookie Logan Couture scored his first NHL goal for San Jose.

Evgeni Nabokov stopped 35 shots for the Sharks, who will return home to face the Penguins tomorrow night.

Zetterberg tied it at 1 at 5:38 of the third period when he poked a puck in from under Nabokov's pad. It was Zetterberg's fourth goal.

Couture opened the scoring with 5:19 left in the second period when he beat Osgood with a wrist shot from the right circle.

Other games

n Canadiens 2, Bruins 1: Patrice Bergeron's goal with 52 seconds left in regulation helped host Boston avoid a historic third consecutive shutout, but Michael Cammalleri scored in the shootout to give Montreal its victory. Boston had not scored in 192 minutes, 6 seconds, dating to Vladimir Sobotka's goal at 7:02 of the third period Saturday against Edmonton. The Bruins had not been shut out three games in a row since the 1928-29 team scored once over five games from Feb. 2-14, 1929.

n Blue Jackets 4, Thrashers 3: Raffi Torres scored two second-period goals last night and visiting Columbus held on for a win against Atlanta, which lost for the fourth time in five home games.

n Canucks 5, Wild 2: Tough guy Darcy Hordichuk and newly signed Matt Pettinger each scored their first goals this season, forming an unlikely pair to lead short-handed Vancouver to a win against host Minnesota. The Canucks played without seven injured regulars, including goaltender Roberto Luongo.

n Senators 3, Lightning 2: Jason Spezza scored a power-play goal 4:17 into overtime to give host Ottawa a victory against Tampa Bay. Spezza, out the previous two games because of back pain, drove a slap shot past Antero Niittymaki after Tampa Bay defenseman Mattias Ohlund was sent off for holding three minutes into the overtime. Spezza also assisted on Daniel Alfredsson's first-period goal.

Notes

n Columbus may have trouble holding on to the NHL's Blue Jackets because the club has been losing $12 million a year in central Ohio, according to a report released yesterday by a business group commissioned by the city. The report recommended a variety of ways to strengthen the team's economic position, including new taxes and fees consistently rejected by voters. ... Boston center David Krejci will stay away from the team the next 3-5 days while he is quarantined with the swine flu. The Bruins also signed backup goalie Tuukka Rask to a two-year contract extension that will keep him with the team through the 2011-12 season. No financial terms were disclosed. ... The NHL suspended Vancouver defenseman Shane O'Brien for one game after his stick made contact with the New York Rangers' Sean Avery while both players were on their respective benches Tuesday. No penalties were called at the time of the incident. ... San Jose put defenseman and captain Rob Blake on the injured-reserve list with an upper-body injury and recalled defenseman Derek Joslin from Worcester (AHL) to replace him. ... The reeling Carolina Hurricanes recalled their first-round draft pick from 2008, center Zach Boychuk, in their latest attempt to help them snap a 10-game losing streak, which includes an 0-6-2 road mark.
