DISTRICT

Lake Erie, Presque Isle Bay: Excellent catches of smallmouth and largemouth bass were released in the bay and main lake last weekend. Anglers are reminded that until bass season opens June 13, it is unlawful to target spawning beds. Paul Cromling of Floreffe caught a 9-pound walleye in Ohio waters last month. Anglers in Pennsylvania have been picking up walleyes at night trolling stickbaits in 8 to 15 feet; the daytime bite on crawler harnesses has been sporadic. Perch catches remained inconsistent with anglers fishing in 52 feet north/northwest of Walnut Creek, and in 35 feet toward Elk Creek, although this spot produced more gobies, white bass and other unwanted species.

Allegheny River, Allegheny Reservoir (Warren County): Bob Meadows of Warren released a 28-inch pike and Ron Barker three legal-size muskies, all in the reservoir. A 28-inch walleye also was released in the reservoir, but walleyes in the reservoir and river were averaging 151/2-21 inches. The river was high Wednesday. Ward Lauffenburger of Warren caught a 22-inch brown trout in the tail waters. Smallmouth bass were released in the river and reservoir in recent days.

Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County): Crappies and bluegills and a few walleyes were reported in recent days, along with releases of largemouth bass. Two 18-inch crappies were caught from shore under the causeway.

Shenango Reservoir (Mercer County): Anglers were marking crappies in about 16 feet, but the bite was slow in the cooler water of recent days. Bass, northern pike, catfish and the occasional walleye were reported this week. Releases from the dam midweek raised water levels in the river, where anglers were catching hybrid striped bass.

Oil Creek (Crawford County): Excellent fishing continued this week. Trout were rising all day to a variety of dense hatches, including sulphurs, March browns, light cahills, blue-winged olives, and blue quills.

Piney Dam (Clarion County): Walleyes, bass and perch were hitting on minnows, crawlers and Hot 'n Tots.

Kahle Lake (Clarion County): Bluegills and crappies were taking live bait, and bass were hitting on soft plastics and crankbaits.

Lake Arthur (Butler County): Savannah Romans, 13, of Butler caught a citation-size 21/2-pound, 16-inch crappie with 16-inch girth. Chad Peet and Mark Iarrapini, both of Butler, each limited out on walleyes up to 26 inches. Limits of walleyes are unusual in this impoundment, although the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission has been stocking walleyes in recent years. Anglers were catching hybrid stripers, typically 5 to 7 pounds, as they chased alewife along the shoreline. Releases of largemouth bass were reported.

Allegheny River: Anglers were catching walleyes, saugers, smallmouth bass, white bass and catfish from boat and shore in water that was slightly high with good color as of Wednesday. The Venture Outdoors Downtown TriAnglers released 22 fish from the North Shore Wednesday. Highlights included Ray Beale of Morningside's nearly 123/4-inch smallmouth bass, Tommy Lippert of Spring Garden's 23-inch channel catfish, Marty Masterno of Spring Garden's 15-inch river redhorse, and Bob Miller of Moon Township's 11-inch skipjack herring.

Monongahela River: Releases of smallmouth bass and channel catfish, 3-5 pounds, were reported in recent days, with good yields coming at the mouths of creeks and in the warm water outflows of power plants.

Ohio, Beaver rivers: An angler inadvertently caught and released a paddlefish -- an endangered species -- Tuesday. Saugers, catfish and releases of bass were reported.

Youghiogheny Reservoir (Fayette County): Big numbers of largemouth and smallmouth bass were released in recent days. The crappie bite was slow, but anglers were catching some slabs and especially nice perch. Walleye catches remained sporadic. Northern pike were hitting around Jockey Hollow launch area.

Youghiogheny River: A Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission trout stocking is slated for today and another for July 2. Very good trout fishing continued through the middle of the week, although rainfall late Tuesday night might have muddied the water from the Casselman River on down. The outflow typically stays fishable depending on releases from the reservoir.

Meadow Run (Fayette County): The Delayed Harvest section and upper reaches were yielding nice numbers of trout on this Youghiogheny River tributary in recent days.

High Point Lake (Somerset County): Anglers reported catching northern pike on shiners and spoons last week.

Quemahoning Reservoir (Somerset County): Walleyes, smallmouth and largemouth bass, and bluegills were hitting, along with northern pike, including a 37-incher released by an angler.

Lake Somerset (Somerset County): Crappies and catfish were reported in recent days. An angler released a nice-size muskie.
